It is a hamlet located at an altitude of 7887 feet within Senchal Wild life sanctuary Close to Darjeeling this small Himalayan village called Chatakpur has beautiful home stay developed. The place is scenic, offbeat and nice. The destination offers guest not only a quiet and memorable stay but also some adventure activities with proper guides. Though life is tough in such difficult terrain each but each villager is a symbol of happiness.
On the northern side, it is backed by the view of mount Kanchenjunga and on the southern side the undulating green valley and the meandering Relly Khola The homestay rooms are not clustered and are scattered. They are within short distance between each other. The place is popular due to the magnificient setting and it offers view of magnificent Himalayan range along with the snow capped mountains.
Short treks can be arranged from here for tourist to explore the area. Trek to Tiger Hill or near by Rimbi village through wild life sanctuary can be arranged to enjoy the nature. Chatakpur offers a number of popular trek routes that lead to the top of the Tiger Hill. During this trek, guest will get glimpses of the Mount Everest on various points. The place also offers an option of birding. It may not be the paradise for bird lovers yet it offers quite a number of avifauna. Short trek in search of bird will offer immense pleasure to tourist. Senchal Wild Life Sanctuary surrounds the area. The sanctuary with an area of nearly 38.88 square kilometres and the elevation ranges from 1500 meters to 2600 meters. Senchal receives a very heavy amount of rainfall. The Sanctuary is criss crossed by number of streams. The Senchal Lake is the main reservoir which supplies water to the town of Darjeeling. Tourist can enjoy village activities like cooking, farming and similar activities. It is best for leisure holidays. A beautiful high altitude lake locally called Pokhori lies close to the home stay. It is nearly 10 minutes walk from the stay and is worth visiting.
Chatakpur can be visited throughout the year but for those planning to visit the forest are advised to avoid the rainy season. It is closed from 15th June to 15th September each year. The approch road from Kurseong is with boulder for the last 4 - 8 kilometres and one will have to use a vehicle with good ground clearance like Tata Sumo / Spacio / Bolero / Scorpio and avoid Innova or any small vehicle like Alto, Mariuti, Indica etc. Bagdogra irport (IXB) / New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) / Siliguri is nearly 88 kilometres. National Highway 55 passes close to the Sanctuary . The sanctuary is 10 kilometres away from Darjeeling. Chatakpur is 17 kilometres from Ghoom and is nearly 7 kilometres from Sonada.
