Janakpur - Janakpur is also known as Janakpurdham. It is one of the historical and religious cities of Nepal. Janakpur is the administrative headquarters of Dhanusa District and is located about 123 kilometres south - east of Kathmandu. Janakpur is 20 kilometres from the Indian border. As per Hindu mythology Janakpur is also the birthplace of the Goddess Sita and place of her marriage to the God Ram. It is also a city of ponds. Janakpur is also home for Nepal’s only railway and railhead, it a tourist attraction for steam international locomotive enthusiasts. It is home to many annual colourful festivals. Dhanusharather Janakpur in particular is regarded as the world centre of Mithila Culture. Janakpur is located in the Terai region or in the foothills of Himalaya. It is forested and marshy terrain at the base of the Himalaya mountain range with few rivers like Dudhmati, Jalad, Rato, Balan and Kamala crossing the area at various places. It is famous for its temples and the numerous ponds of religious importance. The ponds were polluted and gradually the people are becoming conscious and trying to preserve the 52 gandas or 208 ponds. Nearly two million people in the area still speak Maithili. The people of Mithila are famous for their wildly colorful paintings. Mithila art is primitive and it offers a fascinating window onto rural life in the Terai.

Spring - mid February to March, summer is April to mid July, monsoon is mid July to mid September, autumn is September to mid November and winter is December to mid February. September to April is pleasant and several festivals fall during this period. Regular bus / Car services are available from Kathmandu and other cities. It has regular flights from Kathmandu. Religious celebrations include Deepawali, Vijayadashami followed by Chhath Puja (sun worship) six days after Deepawali. Both the festivals Deepawali and Chhath are heavily celebrated with a carnival-like atmosphere and on the full moon day before the festival of Holi, a one-day Parikrama (circumambulation) of the city is celebrated with much fun fair. Airways – Janakpur has an airport. The airport is served by a few private airlines, with daily flights to and from Kathmandu. The duration of flight is about 20-25 minutes. The aircrafts are usually small with 17-20 passenger capacity. Janakpur has a domestic airport IATA: JKR, ICAO: VNJP with nearly most flights connecting to Indian cities and Kathmandu. Nearest major airport is Tribhuwan International Airport at Kathmandu a twenty five minutes flight time. It has flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Kochi, Goa, Hyderabad and many more places. There are international flights also.
Railways – It is home to the only operational railway in Nepal, the Janakpur Railway. There is as such no railway system in Nepal but one can reach any of the bordering town of Nepal by availing Indian Railways except Janakpur. It is near to Sitamarhi railway station which is just 45 kilometres and Jaynagar railway station which is just 32 kilometres, both in nearby India.
Roadways – This town of Janakpur is located about 380 kilometres south - east of Kathmandu. Janakpur is 20 kilometres from the Indian border. It is home to the only operational railway in Nepal with good network of road. Regular bus services are available from Kathmandu and other cities.
