Lachen also having a Dzumsa is situated at an altitude of 2750 meters. It is about 5 and a half hours drive from Gangtok. The Lachen Monastery located on a top of the village commands a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and country side. Resorts, Hotels and Lodges are available for accommodation.  Tarum Hot springs, 8 kilometres by road from Chungthang and 4 kilometres of trek, on way to Lachen is recommended for visit.

Lachen is a small establishment in North Sikkim district in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is located at an elevation of nearly 2750 metres and nearly 130 kilometres from Gangtok and on the way sightseeing spots are Tashi View Point, Kabi Lungtsok, Naga Waterfall, the Confluence of Lachen Chu & Lachung Chu at Chungthang. The name Lachen literally means "big pass". It is a tourist destination with adifference. Tourist visit Lachen to explore Gurudongmar Lake and Tso Lhamu lakes. which is situated in a cold desert nearly 55 kilometres from here . Tso Lhamu is not within the permit. The scenic beauty of Gurudongmar is classic. The lake has portion of it in liquid state even if the temperature is - 24 °C to - 30 °C, it is said that Guru Nanak once touched this edge to drink water and from then on it never solidifies. Guest can visit the Lachen Gompa and observe the simple village life of the ‘Lachenpas’.The area is restricted for foreigners, they can stay at Lachen and move only to Lachung and not towards Gurudongmar lake. In 1977 North Sikkim district became home to Khangchendzonga National Park, which has an area of 1784 square kilometres and it shares the park with West Sikkim district. It is also home to the Shingba (Rhododendron) Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established in 1984 and has an area of 43 square kilometres. Thangu valley is the meeting point of Thangu Chu, Chopta Chu & Lassur Chu. It is situated at an altitude of nearly 14000 feet. Chopta Valley is situated at a height of 14500 feet on the way to Gurudongmar. This Valley is also known for its flowers next to the more famous one at Yumthang.Lachen offers a number of tourist accommodations. However a hotel here cannot be booked directly. As per government rule you can visit North Sikkim only by booking a complete tour package.

Communication 

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and is nearly 250 kilometres. Chopper service is available for Gangtok from Bagdogra otherwise one has to drive to Gangtok nearly 130 kilometres via National Highway 10. Gangtok to Lachen is 5 - 6 hours drive and requires Inner Line Permit (ILP). The nearest major railway Station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). From New Jalpaiguri Railway Station one has to drive to Gangtok nearly 130 kilometres. Next with one day rest and after permit is issued  move to Lachen in 5 - 6 hours drive. Next with one night rest at Gangtok and after permit is issued  move to Lachen in 5 - 6 hours drive. From Lachung one can visit Gurudongmar nearly 55 kilometres.
