Gangtok & North Sikkim is a popular package tour to Lachung and Lachen. The rest of the places allowed to tourist are Mangan the district capital and Dzongu, an offbeat destination. Only Yumthang, Yumesamdong, Gurudongmar and Chopta Valley of North Sikkim is accessible for tourists in North Sikkim. The journey is very beautiful and the Buddhist prayers flags flying from long poles create spectacular sights. The journey is long, tiring but the scenic beauty will help you forget all this. Road side stalls are very very few and momos (dumplings), Wai Wai noodles one can try. Sampling the local millet beer (known as Tongba or chang) is a great way to enjoy.
Dzongu is nearly 10 kilometres from Mangan or 75 kilometres from Gangtok. Whereas Places of interest from Lachen are Chopta Valley, Gurudongmar Lake, Thangu and Green Lake trek. Places to visit Dzongu are Lingthem, Hee Gyathang Lake, Pentong, Tholung Monastery is 20 Kilometres from Passingdang, Traditional Lepcha House Museum in Namprikdang, Waterfalls with Lingzya falls as the best, Tingvong & Kusong Village and Keushong 3 - 4 days trek. Mangan is at an elevation of 956 meters above sea level and is nearly 65 kilometres away from Gangtok. Lachung is nearly 132 kilometres from Gangtok via Chungthang. Places of interest are Yumthang Valley, Yumesamdong, Lachung Monastery, Katao and Hot Water spring from Lachung. Lachen is nearly 125 kilometres from Gangtok via Chungthang.
North Sikkim visit is only possible on a guided tour and a permit and has to be issued in Gangtok prior to travel. A copy of Guest photo ID card and 4 photos per guest is required to obtain the permits for North Sikkim. All the roads are subject to frequent landslides. The terrain is very difficult and cold. Nevertheless, the journey into the valley is stunning.
The Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake is a journey which one can never forget situated at 17100 feet offers a great view. The Journey starts at 5 A M. It's mostly dark at that time as one drive- up / uphill, the sun rays hit the snow peaks creating spectacular mountains of gold and silver. In winters the entire lake is frozen except a corner which is considered to be very sacred. One halt at Thangu at 13000 feet in a restaurant where tea is served along with bread butter (Bread has to be carried by the travelers) and noodles. Socks of Yak wool and rubber boots are available on sale/rent. The journey ahead is into the land of frozen rivers and chilled waterfalls. After about 16000 feet till Gurudongmar is a valley with mountains on all sides. Its a high altitude desert, hardly any vegetation and has very cold as chilled winds blow down the slopes. Guest with breathing problems should avoid the place, otherwise one will be gasping for breath at this altitude. North Sikkim district has four main settlements namely Lachen, Lachung, Mangan & Chungthang. Places of Interest are Yumthang Valley, Gurudongmar Lake, Katao, Kala Pathar, Yumesamdong, Zero Point, Hot water spring. Lachung Monastery & Lachen Monastery are two more places to visit.
Yumthang Valley beyond Lachung is the major tourist attraction in the region with colourful rhododendron blooming generally in May - June. Soaring snow-capped peaks and the hot water spring is worth visiting. It seems due to high sulfur compound it has some medicinal properties and cures skin diseases. The Lachung Monastery / Gompa is worth visiting and is the largest Buddhist shrine in this region located on the hillside. A short trek or trail through the village at night in Lachung is quite enjoyable. Dark with few bulbs here and there creepy and one can hear is the stream of water flowing. North Sikkim Packages are best during End November to Mid April. May To October is Monsoon hence the road and the weather is not suitable for Guests.

Communication / Connectivity
Airways - Nearest Airport is Pakyong Airport (PYG)is 30 kilometers from Gangtok but due to the Himalayan weather landing is sometimes difficult. Nearest Major Airport is Bagdogra approximately 120 kilometres from Gangtok and is nearly 05 hours drive. Bagdogra airport is served by regular Indian Airlines, Kingfisher, Spice Jet, and Jet Airways. There are daily flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. The airport is well connected by road and railways. There is a regular Chopper / Helicopter service to Gangtok and back. It can also be booked through Agents / Tour operators. Lachung is 135 Kilometres, Lachen 125 kilometres and Mangan 65 kilometres from Gangtok by road.
Railways -Sikkim has no railway system in the state to date but the recent construction/ laying of railway track from Sevoke will help trains reach Gangtok within a couple of hours. Rangpo is the station in Sikkim and will be opening soon. Siliguri Sevoke Rangpo Railway track is under construction. The train will start operating till Rangpo by the year 2022 New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is approximately 120 kilometres away and is the nearest railway station for Gangtok. NJP is well connected to the rest of India. There are over two dozen of train plying on daily basis to New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Guwahati, etc. Lachung is 135 Kilometres, Lachen 125 kilometres and Mangan 65 kilometres from Gangtok by road. Roadways – It is well connected with NH 10 and is 120 kilometres away from Siliguri, 85 kilometers from Kalimpong and 115 kilometres from Darjeeling. The road is beautiful and is accompanied by river Teesta. A special permit has to be issued from Gangtok prior to visit. This is generally taken care of by us.
